Stage 1A Partial Final Closure February 2006
Forward Landfill Project No.021605.06
® in Vector's Grass Valley laboratory. Falling head, rising tail water tests were
performed in the laboratory according to the procedures outlined in ASTM
D5084. The permeability of the samples met the specified value of 1.0 x10-6
cm/s or lower. Results of the laboratory permeability tests of the clay liner are
presented in Appendix C. Table 3 presents a summary of the compacted earthfill
permeability tests.
BAT Permeability: Thirty-six (36) in situ soil permeability tests were conducted
during placement and compaction of the compacted earthfill. The BAT
permeameter consists of a stainless steel tip containing a cylindrical porous
filter. The tip is attached to a steel pipe and is driven or pushed into the clay
liner to a pre-designated depth. A container partially filled with water and
partially filled with gas is then lowered into the steel pipe and brought into
contact with the porous filter using a hypodermic needle and septum. The gas in
® the chamber is then pressurized. A pressure transducer is used to monitor the
changes in the gas pressure in the container as water flows out of the porous
filter. The quantity of flow is computed by measuring the gas pressure change in
the container and then applying Boyle's-Mariotte's law and other flow mechanics
principals. The pressure record obtained for each increment of time is entered
into a computer program for a calculation of the in situ hydraulic conductivity.
Test results for the BAT testing are summarized in Table 3. Detailed results are
provided in Appendix C.
Upon completion of the compacted earthfill on the slopes, the Contractor
prepared the surface for hydro-seeding by track-walking the area. Vector's
CQA Monitor observed the track-walking procedure and advised the Contractor
of unacceptable areas that needed to be reworked.
Vector Engineering, Inc. • 143E Spring Hill Drive•Grass Valley,CA 95945•(530)272-2448
-11-
