Alternative Daily Cover - Moisture Variation Discussion
The moisture content of greenwaste ADC typically varies from season to season
along with changes in feedstock. Other factors influencing the moisture of
greenwaste ADC include the length of time the feedstock or shredded material sits
in stockpiles (inadvertent composting), and how many times the material is turned
over in the course of processing and handling. TASW material stockpiled at Forward
Landfill during the test appeared to be fairly homogeneous if taken as a large
population, but samples of this material varied significantly in composition from one
to the other. The varying amounts of absorbent vs. impervious materials present in
testable quantities (what would fit in a standard laboratory oven) split from the larger
bulk samples collected make the moisture content testing results more variable.
To provide information for future reference, a sample of both greenwaste and TASW
was collected from the stockpile and tested for moisture content. The test used,
ASTM method D2216, expresses results as a percentage of the sample's dry solid
material. For example: a sample with a wet weight of 100 grams, found to have a
25% moisture content, would be made up of 80 grams dry solid material and 20
grams water (Appendix B).
Based on the results of ASTM D2216 the moisture content of the shredded
greenwaste was 26.3% moisture.
Based on the results of ASTM D2216 the moisture content of the shredded TASW
was 23.6% moisture.
