public health and safety and the environment. During the first quarter 2007, no methane
was detected in any of the facilities buildings. A copy of the landfill gas monitoring
probe data is provided in Appendix A.
2.0 FORWARD UNIT
2.1 WATER QUALITY MONITORING
2.1.1 Sampling and Laboratory Analyses
During the first quarter 2007,depth-to-water measurements were recorded in all
groundwater monitoring wells on February 5, 2007 and the groundwater monitoring wells
were sampled by ATC Associates (ATC)between February 5 and 7,2007. Surface water
stations were inspected on February 8,2007 and found to be dry, therefore,no surface
water samples were collected. All lysimeters were inspected and a vacuum was set on
February 6 and 7, 2007. The lysimeters were checked for soil-pore liquid on March 8,
2007, and samples were collected from lysimeters E-2,W-2, LY-A, and
LY-BG1.
A single sample set was collected from each point containing sufficient liquid and
submitted to BC Laboratories, Inc. (BC)of Bakersfield, California, a state certified
laboratory under contract to Forward. Samples were analyzed for the parameters
stipulated in RWQCB Order No. R5-2003-0049. Table 2-1 summarizes site monitoring
parameters, analytical methods, and monitoring frequency. Water quality samples were
also analyzed in the field for dissolved oxygen, turbidity, temperature, specific
conductance, and pH and recorded on well data sheets. The groundwater monitoring
wells, surface water monitoring points, and leachate monitoring points were sampled in
accordance with the sampling and analysis procedures detailed in Appendix B. The well
data sheets, laboratory data, certificates of analyses, and chain-of-custody records for the
sampling program are included in Appendix C. The laboratory analyses and field results
for groundwater monitoring wells, lysimeter and leachate sampling stations are
summarized in Tables 2-2 through 2-7.
2.1.2 QA/QC Results
The quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC)program completed for the first quarter
2007 water quality monitoring event included analyses of four field blanks, two trip
blanks, two equipment blanks, four laboratory method blanks, and one duplicate sample.
The trip, field, equipment, and laboratory method blanks were analyzed for volatile
organic compounds (VOCs)by EPA Method 8260. The results of the QA/QC program
indicate that chloroform was detected in several of the QA/QC trip, field, equipment, and
laboratory method blanks during the first quarter 2007 monitoring event. However,
review of the primary sample results indicates that chloroform was not detected in any of
the primary samples collected from the Forward Unit during the current monitoring
period. During the first quarter 2007 monitoring event, a duplicate sample was collected
from well MW-10 and labeled MW-DUP. As shown on Table 2-2,the duplicate sample
D:\2007-0043\ForwardAustin—wo7.doc
4 Geologic Associates
