SECOND QUARTER 2008 GROUNDWATER TREATMENT FACILITY MONITORING REPORT
FORWARD LANDFILL WDR ORDER NO.R5-2003-0080
At the beginning of second quarter 2008,EW-1 and EW-2 were operational, and the effluent
was discharging to the infiltration pond.
During a site visit on April 16,2008,a field technician found the GTF running with the air
stripper blower operational, but neither EW-1 nor EW-2 was operating. No cause was found
for the two extraction wells to be inoperative. Both wells were restarted and no further issue
was encountered with their operation during the second quarter.
During a site visit on June 1,2008,a field technician found that the flow meter in the
conveyance piping at the GTF air stripper was not working. After inspecting the flow
sensor, the technician found that the sensor paddle wheel had broken away from the sensor.
The technician replaced the paddle wheel and axle but the meter remained inoperative. The
technician attempted to make the meter operational by swapping the flow sensor at the GTF
meter with the sensor from the flow meter at EW-1. After wiring the sensor from EW-1 into
the GTF meter, the meter would not respond. The plant electrician visited the GTF on
June 16,2008,found that the main plant flow sensor wiring was reversed, and corrected the
wiring.Subsequently the main plant meter registered flow correctly. The electrician also
repaired the flow sensor that was moved from the GTF to EW-1 by securing the paddle
wheel with a stainless steel axle.Additionally, the flow sensor at EW-2 was found to contain
fine sediment packed around the paddle wheel, which rendered it inoperable. After
cleaning the paddle wheel, the EW-2 flow sensor operated properly.
The efficiency of the pump at EW-2 was tested on April 1,2008. Data collected during the
efficiency test indicate that EW-2 is producing water effectively. The water levels at EW-1
and EW-2 were measured in April,May,and June 2008. The water levels rose at both wells
between each measurement indicating that the aquifer was recharging during this period.
CH2M HILL reviewed local and regional groundwater elevation data during second
quarter 2008.Groundwater elevations during 2007 and 2008 are consistent with historical
levels and the seasonal water elevation variations are within the normal variations of the
aquifer. No further tests or investigations are planned during 2008 to evaluate operation
of EW-2.
An acid washing of the air stripper packing material is scheduled for the week of
August 11,2008.This routine maintenance procedure removes mineral deposits, thereby
1 improving the efficiency of the treatment system.
3.0 Influent and Effluent Monitoring
Under WDR Order No. R5-2003-0080,effluent samples are analyzed as follows:
• Monthly for pH,specific conductivity,and VOCs
• Quarterly for total dissolved solids
• Annually for dissolved inorganics
All parameters other than dissolved inorganics were analyzed during second quarter 2008.
Figure 1 (at the end of this report) shows the effluent monitoring location.Table 2 presents
' the results of the effluent monitoring performed during second quarter 2008.Appendix A
contains the effluent monitoring field sampling logs and laboratory results for second
quarter 2008.
RDD/082060023(CAH4134.DOC) 2
