i Sampling Plan
This sampling plan is intended to document the procedural and analytical requirements for this
and any subsequent sampling events performed to collect soil samples and to characterize
potential changes in the soil chemistry after land application at the site.
The pilot area, located in the Northern Borrow portion of the site, is an approximately 7.5 -acre
area designated to receive the food processing residual. To obtain a reasonable
understanding of the existing site conditions, the site will be gridded into seven 1 -acre parcels,
with samples collected from each area. Three of the seven locations that will be selected for
soil profile testing (i.e., submittal of samples from three depths, up to 3 feet, for analysis).
Once designated, using a surveyor's wheel, or hand held GPS unit, the selected sample
locations will be identified with wooden lath and flagging.
The sampling will be conducted by using a backhoe, and stainless steel hand shovel or trowel
(or new, disposable hand tool) within the area. At each location, the backhoe bucket will be
advanced down to each of the specified depths for sampling. Once collected, the sample
containers will be labeled, placed in a cooler, and sent to the contract laboratory with
completed chain -of -custody documentation for analysis. After the sampling is completed, the
excavations will be backfilled with the stockpiled soil materials.
It is anticipated that at least seven locations will be sampled within the pilot project area. In
addition, two more samples may be collected from the area if visual evidence suggests that
there are other soil materials that are not represented by the selected sampling locations.
4.2 Sampling Procedures
Sampling will be coordinated with the laboratory on holding times, detection limits, quality
objectives, and sample volume before collecting samples. Samples will be collected at
locations based on the identified sample locations, along with up to two additional locations
based on visual and olfactory inspection of the area. The exact number of samples will depend
upon actual field conditions.
At each location, after the backhoe has advanced the excavation to the proposed depth, a
hand tool will be used to remove a thin layer of the overlying soil before a discrete sample of
soil is collected at the designated depth. Up to one pound of soil may be collected from each
sampling location using decontaminated or sample -dedicated disposable trowels, placed in a
decontaminated or sample -dedicated disposable bucket, and thoroughly mixed to homogenize
the sample. The sample will then be transferred to a new sample container, sealed, labeled,
and placed in an appropriate container for transport to the analytical laboratory. The backhoe
will then advance the excavation to the next desired depth. At the completion of sampling
activities, the sampling team will transport the samples to the analytical laboratory for analyses
using strict chain -of -custody protocols.
WFORWARD LANDFILL LAND APPLICATION 9
