4.3 Sampling Equipment
The following equipment will be necessary to perform the sampling
■ Disposable or stainless steel (SS) trowels
• Sealable plastic bags
■ 5 gallons of deionized/distilled water
■ 500 mL of 0.1 N nitric acid in a labeled spray
bottle (Note: only necessary if using
equipment that requires decon)
■ Chain of custody forms and custody seals
■ Level C health and safety equipment (Tyvex,
tape, respirator with NEPA filter)
■ GPS unit (not required if sampling locations
are surveyed)
■ Field log book
4.4 Sample Locations
• Packing and duct tape
■ Survey lath
■ First aid kit and eye wash
■ Mailing labels and markers
■ Cooler and ice or blue ice
• Eight -ounce wide mouth glass jars
■ Disposable or SS mixing bowls
■ Decontamination equipment (2 % gallon
sprayer, non -phosphate detergent,
disposable brush, paper towels, cotton
towels)
The sample locations will be recorded in a field logbook and staked in the field before sampling
is conducted. The designated sample location will be entered into the logbook and any
physical reference points will be labeled. After each sample is collected and the sample
location is recorded, each location shall be backfilled and graded. A map showing the sample
locations, and site topography will be provided in the final sampling report.
Pre -cleaned containers will be supplied by the laboratory and will not be rinsed prior to sample
collection. No preservative will be added to the containers.
4.6 Decontamination Procedures
All reusable sampling equipment that comes into contact with soil will be decontaminated.
Disposable equipment intended for one-time use will not be decontaminated, but will be
packaged for disposal. Decontamination will occur prior to and after each use of a piece of
equipment. The field representative will decontaminate all reusable sampling devices used.
The following decontamination procedures will be followed to address the likely constituents
(i.e., metals):
1. Non -phosphate detergent and tap -water (bottled water) wash, using a brush if necessary
2. Tap -water rinse
3. 0.1 N nitric acid rinse
4. Deionized/distilled water rinse two times
In the process of collecting soil samples some different types of investigation -derived waste
(IDV) may be generated including:
WFORWARD LANDFILL LAND APPLICATION 10
