4. Moisture conditioning shall be uniform throughout each lift. Use tilling,
® discing, or other options to thoroughly mix soil and water. If underlying
lifts are allowed to dry out, they shall be reconditioned and recompacted
prior to placement of new liner material.
5. The clay liner shall be compacted in-place to a minimum dry density of
90 percent relative compaction at a water content of 3 to 6 percent greater
than the optimum water content as measured by ASTM D1557.
6. Scarify surface of each lift to a depth of 2 inches prior to placing the
subsequent lift of Clay Liner Material.
7. Clay Liner Material shall not be placed at a high water content so that
excessive cracking occurs when the layer dries out.
8. Clay liner soil shall be sufficiently blended and compacted to provide a
homogeneous clay liner sufficient to meet required permeability.
9. The top surface of the final lift shall be bladed smooth and recompacted
with a non-vibratory steel drum roller to produce a smooth top surface free
from tire or roller marks, holes, and depressions more than 1/2 inch deep.
The top surface shall conform to the lines and grades shown on the
Construction Drawings.
10. At the end of each construction day's activities, completed lifts or sections
of compacted clay liner shall be sealed by rolling with a rubber tired, or
smooth drum, rollers and sprinkled with water as needed.
11. Upon completion of the clay liner, the GEOSYNTHETICS
CONTRACTOR shall place geomembrane lining as specified in
Section 02778, HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE (HDPE)
GEOEBRANE The OWNER shall survey the termination edges of the
HDPE Geomembrane at a minimum 75-foot interval.
12. Prepare the top surface of the clay liner for placement of the geomembrane
liner by removing rock, debris, cracks, or other structural irregularities that
could puncture or cause undue stress on the geomembrane liner. The top
surface will be inspected and approved by the QA/QC CONSULTANT and
the GEOSYNTHETICS CONTRACTOR prior to placement of the
geomembrane lining.
13. All corners/edges of the finished clay liner shall be rounded in preparation
for geomembrane lining installation.
D. Moisture Control
1. During compacting operations, maintain water content in each lift of the
Clay Liner Material within range of 3 to 6 percent greater than the optimum
water content.
2. If Clay Liner Material is too dry, add water to material by sprinkling, then
mixing or discing to make moisture content uniform throughout lift.
3. Do not attempt to compact Clay Liner Material that contains excessive
moisture. Aerate material by blading, discing, harrowing, or other methods,
to hasten drying process.
® E. Maintaining Clay Liner Condition:
1. Following completion of the clay liner, it shall be maintained in a moist
Forward Landfill WMU FU-13
02300 15 EARTHWORK
