C
C]
Water Quality Monitoring Report
Forward Landfill
3.1.11 Corrective Action Monitoring
The Groundwater Treatment Facility (GTF) at the Austin Unit has been operational since
1994 to mitigate impacts from landfill releases. Impacted groundwater is extracted
from four wells (EW -1, EW -2, EW -3R, and EW -4) that pump groundwater through an air
stripper treatment system to remove VOCs. Treated groundwater is discharged to an
infiltration pond (constructed in 2003) north of the Austin Road Unit of the Forward
Landfill. During the monitoring period, the GTF treated 25.0 million gallons of
groundwater and removed approximately 1.20 pounds of VOCs. Details regarding
corrective action remediation system operations and performance evaluation for the
second quarter 2016 are presented in Appendix C.
3.2 Summary
Groundwater quality conditions beneath the Austin Unit during the second quarter 2016
monitoring period were generally similar to historical results. With the exception of well
AMW-6, one CL was exceeded for nitrate as nitrogen in DMP well AMW-12. In addition,
the WQPS for iron was exceeded at well AMW-10. Verification sampling for the
exceedances at wells AMW-10 and AMW-12 is scheduled for July 2016. Although,
several CLs were exceeded and several VOCs were detected in well AMW-6, it is
recognized that well AMW-6 should have been identified a CAP well in the M&RP. For
the CAP/evaluation wells, 16 of 28 wells reported one or more VOCs exceeding a PQL,
with CAP well AMW-1 having the greatest number of VOCs (14), including 10 measured
above a PQL. For surface water, toluene was detected at a quantifiable concentration at
background surface water monitoring station ASW -1. No other CL exceedances were
noted for during the second quarter 2016 monitoring period. Since surface water
station ASW -1 is currently dry, verification sampling will be performed during the next
sampling event when flow is reported at ASW -1. For the vadose zone, seven VOCs were
measured in the sample collected from suction lysimeter FU -05, all of the other
lysimeters were reported dry during the second quarter 2016 monitoring period. Under
the existing CAP, the GTF pumped 25.0 million gallons of groundwater removing an
estimated 1.20 pounds of VOCs.
M:\ 2016.0007\FA 2Q16.docx 14
