0 2.0 SITE CONDITIONS
E
This section summarizes the site conditions regarding the stability analysis of the
proposed North County Sanitary Landfill. A more detailed description of the site
development is included in Preliminary Siting Report, North County Sanitary
Landfill, San Joaquin County, California, EMCON Associates, February 1988.
The field investigation and geologic and hydrogeologic conditions underlying the
site are fully discussed in Geologic and Hydrogeologic Report, Proposed Landfill
Development Site, San Joaquin County, California, EMCON Associates,
September 1987.
The proposed landfill is near the northeastern edge of the San Joaquin Valley.
The valley is a deep, asymmetric structural trough filled with sediments derived
from adjacent mountain ranges. The geology of the eastern portion of the San
Joaquin Valley is characterized by alluvial sediments deposited by rivers and
streams emanating from source terrains in the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the
east.
The youngest geologic units underlying the site are semiconsolidated alluvial de-
posits of the Turlock Lake and Riverbank Formations. The Turlock Lake and
Riverbank Formations consist of arkosic alluvial deposits of gravels, sand, silts,
and clays. Due to similar origins and common lithologies, differentiation of allu-
vial deposits into formations is difficult.
The proposed site is situated at the western edge of the Arroyo Seco Pediment
(Piper, et al., 1939). This geomorphic feature was produced by the Mokolumn
River and other streams originating in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The sedi-
ments were described as fluvial (stream or river) deposits consisting of gravel,
sand, silt, and clay.
PJ9 9390217.00W 2 Rev. 0 May 23, 1989
