C
C
monia, and sulfides of iron, manganese, and hydrogen. The duration of waste
decomposition can vary from a few years to over a hundred years, depending on
such factors as the levels of oxygen present, refuse moisture content, pH, and
temperature. An exact period of waste decomposition cannot be determined be-
cause of the many variables involved (Bruner and Keller, 1972). However, with
the low precipitation rates present at the site and the measures proposed to con-
trol run-on and runoff, the waste should remain dry. Therefore, waste decompo-
sition should occur over a relatively long period of time.
PJ9 9390218A.00W 17 Rev. 0 July 20, 1989
