placed in the appropriate EPA -approved containers and transported on ice to the
laboratory with chain -of -custody documentation. Field blanks made with organic -
free water will be carried into the field and delivered with the samples to the labo-
ratory.
The procedures used for sampling and analysis are based on the following doc-
uments:
• Procedures Manual for Ground -Water Monitoring at Solid Waste
Disposal Facilities (U.S. EPA, EPA-530/SW-611, August 1977)
• Methods for Chemical Analysis of Water and Wastes (U.S. EPA,
EPA -600/4-79/020, revised March 1979)
• RCRA Draft Permit Writer's Manual -- Ground -Water Protection
40 CRF Part 264, Subpart F (GeoTrans Inc.: EPA Con-
tract 68-01-6464)
• Methods for Organic Chemical Analysis of Municipal and Industrial
Wastewater (U.S. EPA, EPA/600-4-82/057, July 1982)
• Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater
(American Public Health Association et al., 16th edition, 1985)
• Test Methods for Evaluation of Solid Waste: Physical/Chemical
Methods (U.S. EPA, EPA SW -846, 3rd edition, November 1986)
As part of the ground -water monitoring program, the direction of ground -water
flow beneath the site will be determined quarterly. The elevation of ground water
in the monitoring wells will be measured, ground -water contours will be drawn,
and the hydraulic gradient will be calculated. This information and the calculated
velocity of ground -water flow will be presented in each quarterly report. Addition-
ally, the report will include a site map showing monitoring well locations,_ a dis-
cussion of analytical results, and certified analytical results.
6.10.2 Landfill Gas Monitoring
Decomposition of organic waste in a landfill produces various gases, principally
methane and carbon dioxide. When organic waste is initially placed in a landfill,
it contains oxygen and decomposes aerobically for a short time, producing only
carbon dioxide. After the oxygen is depleted, anaerobic decomposition takes
9 place, and both methane and carbon dioxide are produced. The concern over
PJ9 9390218A.00..
