CHAPTER TWO
WASTE GENERATION COMPONENT
le 1\ODUVONe
The California Integrated Waste Management Act of 1989
(ACT) requires that a solid waste generation study be performed
by each jurisdiction. The study may be performed individually
or on a regional basis.
The study must quantify the solid waste stream according to
the following formula:
GENERATION a DISPOSAL + DIVERSION
where:
GENERATION = The total quantity of solid waste generated
within the jurisdiction.
DISPOSAL = The total quantity of solid waste, generated
within the jurisdiction, which is transformed or
disposed of in permitted solid waste facilities.
DIVERSION = The total quantity of solid waste generated
within the jurisdiction which is diverted from
permitted solid waste transformation and
disposal facilities through existing source
reduction, recycling, and composting programs.
Further, the waste is to be identified b waste category
Y g Y
and waste type, and by generation source within the
jurisdiction. The sources are to include residential,
commercial, industrial, and other.
