3.3.2.4 Engineering and Chemical Properties of Waste
The engineering properties of municipal solids waste have been collected from literature.
Physical properties include density, moisture content, particle size and distribution, field
capacity, and porosity. Density varies because of the large variety of wastes, the degree of
compaction, state of decomposition, and the amount of daily cover and total waste. In general,
uncompacted waste densities can vary between 110 pounds per cubic yard (cy) for plastic to 550
pounds per cy for ferrous metals. When waste is compacted with soil, the NCRC&SL currently
estimates that they are getting a combined density of 800 pounds per cubic yard and has an
operating goal of boosting inplace densities to 1,100 pounds per cubic yard.
The chemical properties of wastes are important if evaluating recovery options, especially when
burned for energy recovery. The typical proximate values (moisture, volatile matter, and ash) as
well as densities are shown in Table 5.
North County RC&SL Page 14 of 48 Public Works/Solid Waste
JTD County of San Joaquin—November 30,2004
