5.3 GEOLOGY
This section describes the regional and site geology and hydrogeology of the NCRC&SL. The
information included is intended to meet the requirements of Section 21750(f) of Title 27, which
requires dischargers to assess the geologic condition of the site to provide information about:
• The geologic setting
• Faults, seismicity, and seismic hazards
• Groundwater hydrogeology
Information presented in this section is based on the Geologic and Hydrogeologic Report,
Proposed Landfill Development Site, San Joaquin, County, California, dated September 1987,
revised January 1988 and recent landfill gas probe and groundwater monitoring well boring logs.
These sources can be found in Appendix D.
5.3.1 Geology
5.3.1.1 Regional Geology
The NCRC&SL is located east of Lodi, California near the northwestern edge of the San Joaquin
Valley. Alluvial sediments deposited by river and streams characterize the geology of the eastern
portion of the San Joaquin Valley. The regional geology is summarized in.Appendix D.
5.3.1.2 Site Geology
The 1988 report presented a site-specific topographic map and cross-sections (Drawings 1 and 2)
of soils encountered in borings. Geologic maps of the site (Wagner, D.L., et. al, 1981 and
Jennings, C.W. 1977) show that the geology consists of semi-consolidated Quaternary sediments
of the Modesto and/or Riverbank formations.
5.3.1.3 Seismicity
An assessment of seismicity at NCRC&SL was prepared in two separate reports. The peak
ground acceleration was estimated to range from O.lg (1988 report) to 0.258 (1994 report).
