Box 1810
Stockton, CA 95201
SWAT PROPOSAL REVIEW - CORRAL HOLLOW LANDFILL - CASE 11896
.We have completed our review of the Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill 's Solid Waste
Assessment Test (SWAT) Proposal , dated February 1988. The following comments and
,Assessment
requirements must be included in the actual SWAT investigations and/or
addressed in the SWAT report:
General Comments (to be addressed in SWATReport)
1. The proposal does not mention any of the site's previous disposal uses, such
as sludge, drilling muds, and pesticide container disposals (see attached
20 May 1970 memo) .
2. An analysis of the surface and ground water on, under, and within one mile of
the site must be made to provide a reliable indication whether there is any
leakage of hazardous waste.
3. Provide a summary of the findings of the Air Quality SWAT and discuss any
implications such findings may have. on water quality degradation potential .
Specific Comments (to be addressed in field investigations)
1. The proposed monitoring well drilling methods for the shallow wells MW-4 and
MW-5 should use hollow stem auger (HSA) method, rather than air-rotary casing
hammer method. The HSA method will prevent driving off of any volatiles that
may be present in the small amounts of perched waters.
2. For the deep wells, drilled by air-rotary casing hammer method, the drive
casing will have to be pulled prior to or during actual well construction to
eliminate any pathways for vertical migration of surface or ground waters.
3. The proposed "volclay" grout or a cement-bentonite grout, specified in "The
California Site Mitigation Decision Tree Manual" are acceptable well casing
grouts.
_ 4. For monitoring wells constructed to a depth greater than 150 feet, we recom-
mended that schedule 80 PVC be used in place of the schedule 40 PVC.
Centralizers must be installed on the well casing to ensure screen and casing
alignment in the borehole.
