C'
surface walk sampling. It appears that a sample could be taken during
the early morning hours and meet these conditions. However, if during
the first two days of the testing program this criterion cannot be met
it is proposed that a sample be obtained on the morning of the third
day, regardless of the wind speed.
The sample taken from the gas test wells will be analyzed for the vola-
tile organic compounds specified in Attachment 1 of the Guidelines,
utilizing the "disposal site" detection limits (see Table 1), and
following the methods described in Appendix B. Oxygen, nitrogen, carbon
dioxide, and methane will also be analyzed.
As was mentioned previously, the average wind speed during the 72 -hour
test period was 13.1 mph. This exceeds the recommended level of 10 mph
in the Guidelines. Therefore, it is proposed that for this site a
15 mph maximum wind speed be set for the ambient air testing.
Because of the potential for unpredictable changes in wind direction,
Option 1 of the Guidelines will be implemented. Under this option, two
24-hour ambient air sampling devices will be placed on the perimeter of
the site: one placed upwind (southwest) and one downwind (northeast) of
the landfill area (see Figure 3). Additionally, a directionally -
controlled ambient air sampler will be placed in the vicinity of each
24-hour sampler. The ambient air samples will be collected for three
24-hour sampling periods. - A total of 12 ambient air samples will be
collected.
PJI 9390301 5
Using an organic vapor
analyzer,
the integrated surface emissions sample
will also be analyzed
for both
methane and the volatile organic com-
pounds specified in Attachment 1
of the Guidelines utilizing the "air"
detection limits (see
Table 1).
The samples to be monitored for vola-
tile organic compounds
will be analyzed within 72 hours of collection.
AMBIENT AIR MONITORING
As was mentioned previously, the average wind speed during the 72 -hour
test period was 13.1 mph.
