P
r
C
u
0
C
r
f
I
n
0
n
AIR QUALITY TESTING PROGRAM
The air quality testing program proposed for the Corral Hollow Sanitary
Landfill encompasses (1) a meteorological survey, (2) gas stream charac-
terization, (3) ambient air monitoring, and (4) a gas migration investi-
gation. Each of the four program components is detailed in this sec-
tion.
METEOROLOGICAL SURVEY
,A meteorological survey was conducted at the Corral Hollow Sanitary
Landfill between May 26 and 29, 1987 to determine the local wind flow
patterns and wind speeds. This survey was performed by erecting a por-
table weather station (Climatronics, Model 101282) near the middle of
the landfill to continuously record wind speed and direction. The
location of the weather station (see Figure 2) was selected based on an
evaluation of the topography and physical conditions of the landfill and
positioned more than 500 feet from the closest obstruction. An
anemometer and weather vane were mounted approximately 9 feet above the
ground and wind patterns were recorded for a continuous period of
72 hours in order to obtain wind data which is typical for the site.
During this period the winds came predominantly out of the southwest.
The average wind speed over the 72 -hour period was 13.1 miles per hour
(mph), and the highest and lowest wind speeds were 23 mph and 2 mph,
respectively. (The wind data are summarized in Appendix B.)
GAS STREAM CHARACTERIZATION
The gas stream will be characterized by testing one sample from each of
the five gas test wells that will be installed at the site and collect-
ing an integrated surface emissions sample using a surface sampling
wand. Collection of the integrated surface emissions sample involves
walking a prescribed course with the sampling equipment over a
50,000 -square -foot (ft2) grid of the landfill surface to obtain a compo-
site sample from 3 inches above the ground. The Guidelines recommend a
maximum allowable wind speed of 5 mph on a 10 minute average during the
PJI 9390301 4
