PROJECT- CHARACTERISTICS
The Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill has been in operation since the
mid-1950's and has operated under Solid Waste Facilities Permit No.
39-AA-005 since 1983 . The facility was jointly operated by the
City of Tracy and San Joaquin County until July 1, 1990, when the
Solid Waste Division of the San Joaquin County Department of Public
Works assumed operational responsibility.
The facility receives an average of 850 cubic yards of waste per
day including: residential refuse, commercial wastes, industrial
wastes, construction and demolition wastes, tires, and agricultural
wastes. The facility operates Monday through Saturday from 8: 00
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. No salvage or recycling operations are presently
conducted at the site.
As the new operator, San Joaquin County is required to obtain a
revised Solid Waste Facilities Permit from the Environmental Health
Division of San Joaquin County Public Health Services. As part of
that permit application, the County is proposing to increase the
average daily volume at the landfill from 850 cubic yards (156
tons) per day to 1, 200 cubic yards (221 tons) per day. The County
is also requesting that a peak volume of 1,800 cubic yards (331
tons) per day be, permitted.
When the current Solid Waste Facilities Permit was issued in 1983,
the projected site life of the landfill was estimated to be six
years (capacity in 1989) . However, capacity still remains at the
facility. As part of the present application, the County has
calculated the remaining site life estimate to be January 1995.
Other than increased quantities of solid waste to be received by
the facility under this project, no operational or refuse type
changes are anticipated. Implementation of this project may result
in some potential environmental effects which are discussed in the
following Initial Study.
4
