File No. 20-1008-36 KLEINFELDER
July 14, 1995
A CAT 8250 sheepsfoot compactor was utilized to compact test pad soils. Approximately 3
passes per lift were required to achieve a minimum relative compaction of 90 percent on the
"single-lift" construction test pads 2, 4, and 5. Approximately 3 passes were required to achieve
a minimum relative compaction of 92 percent on Test Pad 3. Approximately 5 passes were
required to achieve a minimum relative compaction of 95 percent on Test Pad 1.
FIELD COMPACTION TEST RESULTS
A total of 58 nuclear field density tests (designated 1 through 58) were performed on the test pad
foundation layer and the test pad between April 11 and 21, 1995. Results of all tests were
verbally reported to Mr. Gabriel Karam of San Joaquin County. In addition, five sand cone
density tests (designated SC-1 through SC-5) were also performed at the site on April 21, 1995.
In-place density and moisture content for Test Numbers 1 through 58 were performed in general
accordance with ASTM Test Methods D-2922 and D-3017, respectively (nuclear probe test
method). In-place moisture contents for Test Number SC-1 through SC-5 were evaluated in
general accordance vrith ASTM Test Method D-2216 (oven-dried test method). The sand cone
density tests were performed in general accordance with ASTM Test Method D-1556. Holes in
the test pad due to testing were backfilled with commercially available powder form bentonite
clay.
A summary of field density tests consisting of test designations and locations, in-place dry
densities and moisture contents, laboratory-obtained maximum dry densities and optimum
moisture content, and specified and achieved relative compaction is attached. Samples of the
materials tested were brought to.our laboratory for determination of the maximum density-
optimum moisture content. The laboratory test results are shown on Table I. Laboratory
compaction curves are presented on Plates 1 through 5.
It should be noted that all failing tests were retested and passed. The reason for the test failures
was to assess the number of passes of the compaction equipment to achieve passing results. Also,
compaction test number 43 was performed at a depth of 6 inches below grade on Test Pad #3.
We note that the SDRI was performed at this depth.
PERMEABILITY TESTING
On April 24, 1995, eight block samples were acquired from the test pads for permeability tests.
County personnel used a John Deer 310D backhoe equipped with 12-inch bucket to cut out the
samples. After samples were acquired, test pad holes were backfilled with test pad barrier layer
soils.
GSM.-md CH195 Page 4 of 10 July 14, 1995
20-1008-36 01995,Kleinfelder,Inc.
