File No. 20-1008-36 KLEINFELDER
July 14, 1995
stockpile SM borrow materials were loosely placed on Test Pad 5. A composite sample of the
SM borrow soils from the test pads was acquired for sieve analysis to verify visual classification.
Test Pad Soil Description -200 Sieve (Percent Passing)
Brown clayey silty sand with some gravel 38
(SM)
On April 13 and 14, 1995, pre-weighed haul trucks delivered 52 tons of red clay to Test Pad 1,
75 tons of red clay to each of Test Pads 2 and 4, and 52 tons of Ione clay to Test Pad 3. Granite
passed the red clay through a 1-inch screen prior to its being loaded on the haul trucks. A blade
then spread the clay to a fairly uniform thickness on each test pad. The spreading effectiveness
was confirmed by measuring clay thickness at random locations.
Premixing of the Ione clay and the upper soil was performed by a large rototiller (CMI RS-500)
on April 19, 1995. One pass at a 2-inch depth was made which broke up the larger clods well.
No premixing of the red clay was necessary. Final mixing for test pads 1 through 4 involved two
passes to achieve the required specifications. During the final pass, water was added to the soil
by a water truck and then mixed into the soil with the CMI RS-500. Samples of the test pad
materials were then acquired for compaction curves, Atterberg Limits, gradations, and
hydrometer analysis from Test Pads 1, 2, 3, and 5. The actual classification of the test pad
barrier soils is silty sandy clay (CL) for Test Pads 1 and 2, sandy silty clay (CL) for Test Pad 3,
clayey sandy silt (NII.) for Test Pad 5. Results of the Atterberg Limits and test pad soil
composition are summarized in the table below.
Test Test Hydrometer
pad Pad Analysis Percent Plasticity Liquid
Soil Description Sand Silt Clay Index Limit
Number
1 Silty Sandy Clay (CL) 43 38 19 9 32
2 Silty Slndy Clay (CL) 41 39 20 12 32
3 Sandy Silty Clay (CL) 29 44 27 12 35
Clayey Sandy Silt
5 (NII-) 37 38 15 7 . 29
Loose thickness of the mixed material was measured at several locations on each test pad with an
average loose thickness of approximately 19°/:inches for Test Pads 1, 2, and 3.
GSM.md CH195 Page 3 of 10 July 14, 1995
20-1008-36 01995,Kleinfelder,Inc.
