Results
Prescriptive closure cap was verified at excavation No.I (Photos 1 through"5 and Field Record).
The closure cap was not found at the other excavations.
Refuse was found west of the road, beneath the drainage ditch, at excavation Nos. 2 and 3
(Photos 6 through 11). This appeared to be household refuse. The soil cover over the refuse
beneath the drainage ditch at these locations was between six and 12 inches in depth. The
excavations did not indicate the presence of closure cap near the drainage ditch at those locations.
No refuse was found at No.4, which was the southern-most excavation (Photos 12 and 13). A thin
layer of litter, apparently not a refuse lift, was noted at excavation No. 5 (Photo 14). These
findings are consistent with the edge of refuse shown in County records
Refuse was not found east of the road at any location. From this, we conclude that refuse extends
under the road at excavation Nos. 2 and 3, but not beyond the road.
The refuse found at Excavation No.I was discolored. At the request of San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Department staff, a sample of this refuse was analyzed for potentially toxic
material. The results (attached) did not indicate contamination by toxic materials.
Conclusion
Results of this investigation indicate that refuse exists with little cover beneath a portion`ofthe
drainage ditch south of excavation No.1 and north of excavation No.5. It is possible that water
infiltrating through the refuse is impacting the shallow aquifer along this alignment.
Refuse was apparently not placed adjacent to the road at, or south of, excavation Nos. 4 and 5.
Closure cap has been placed over the refuse adjacent to the road at excavation No.1.
PHASE 2 INVESTIGATION
Purpose
The purpose of Phase 2 investigation will be to determine the extent of the closure cap west of the
eastern landfill road.
Procedure
The extent of the closure cap will be assessed by pot-holing to a maximum depth of four feet with
either a 12-inch diameter auger or small backhoe in the area west of the drainage ditch. These pot-
holes will be located in line with excavation Nos. 2 and 3, and at other locations as necessary to
define the western limit of the closure cap sufficient to ensure that any refuse along the road which
investigation of Groundwater Impact 3 San Joaquin County Public Works/Solid Waste
Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill March 3,2006
