D. Responsibility for Safety
1. The Contractor is solely and wholly responsible for the safety of its workers
and damages to his equipment. All OHSA safety standards shall be practiced
by the Contractor.
E. Landfill Gas (LFG)
' 1. When buried in a landfill, refuse and other organic material products LFG
which is approximately 50 percent methane by volume and may contain other
contaminants. Potential hazards associated with LFG are due to:
' a. Oxygen deficiency in the landfill gas
I
b. Combustible characteristics of landfill gas
c. Potential hazards for hydrogen sulfide in LFG
Potential hazards include:
' i. Fire
ii. Explosion
' iii. Asphyxiation
LFG may also contain trace concentrations of organic compounds. Some of these
' compounds are known to be hazardous in high concentrations or may have
carcinogenic potential. When present in LFG, such compounds are usually in the
parts -per -million or parts -per -billion range. Dilution of LFG in air to below the
' OSHA safety limits of 1.25 percent methane (25 percent of the Lower Explosive
Limit) usually reduces the concentration of trace compounds to below detection
limits. LEG can move through soils, especially sand layers that may exist at the
' site. Movement through soils can remove the odorous compounds of LFG, such
that LFG can be detected only with electronic instruments.
' 1.02 DEFINITIONS
Refer to Section 01075 — Technical Specifications Definitions.
'
1.03 REFERENCES
' 1.04 SUBMITTALS
A.
