GRADING PROJECT
CORRALWORK PLAN
SANITARY,
PURPOSE
The purpose of this work plan is to outline the procedures and tasks by Public Works Department (Solid
Waste Division) to grade the Southern section of Corral Hollow Sanitary landfill (CHSL) (Figure 1).
The purpose of the proposed grading project is to comply with Title 27 section 21090. Refuse has
settled in the identified area, and there are now low areas on the surface that may cause ponding. The
low areas were discovered when a recent fire removed the vegetation, exposing the surface.
BACKGROUND
CHSL is located at 31130 South Corral Hollow Road, in southern San Joaquin County, approximately 5
miles south of the City of Tracy, at the intersection of Interstate 580 and Corral Hollow Road. CHSL
covers approximately 58 acres, of which 43 acres was permitted disposal area. The remaining area is
comprised of access roads, storm water retention ponds, setbacks for environmental monitoring, and
firebreaks. Land within 1,000 feet of the facility is used for grazing and agriculture.
CHSL was certified closed in 1996. The closure cover consists of a two- to six-foot foundation layer
under a one -foot minimum thick, low -permeability soil layer, covered by a one -foot thick vegetative
surface layer. Currently CHSL is under post closure maintenance.
WORK TASKS
Filling Low Areas
The work area is approximately two acres. The average fill in the low areas is about two feet and
approximately 2,000 cubic yards of soil will be needed for the grading project.
The grading area includes concrete rubble placed during closure for erosion control. This rubble is
scattered in the low areas, it is now an obstruction in maintaining the landfill surface, but will be utilized in
this grading project.
To fill the low areas, concrete rubble first will be pushed into low spots of the area. Smaller concrete
rubble may be crushed by heavy equipment. The top of the vegetative layer may be disturbed in moving
and pushing the concrete rubble into low spots, but under no circumstance will the barrier layer be
disturbed during the project.
The County will rent a bulldozer to do the grading and a scraper to excavate soil from the retention pond
to the fill the low areas.
Grading Project Work Plan San Joaquin County
Corral Hollow Sanitary Landfill 1 Public Works Department
February 12, 2008 Solid Waste Division
