(CASE NO. 3032)
P r -hr-/
We have reviewed the Exceedances of Water Quality Protection Standards and Maximum
Contaminant Levels, Fourth Quarter 2003 Monitoring Period submitted on 13 February 2004 by
GeoLogic Associates on behalf of Allied Waste Industries, Inc. The report provides results of retest
samples from MW-4 (toluene, benzene, ethylbenzene, MTBE and xylenes), MW-9B, and MW-l0A
(barium and beryllium). Barium and beryllium were detected during the 5-year constituent of concern
testing. The VOC detections in MW-4 and the elevated beryllium in MW-9b and-1Oa were not
confirmed. However, barium concentrations greater that the state MCL were confirmed at MW-9A.
Barium should be added to the list of quarterly groundwater monitoring constituents for each well in
the French Camp monitoring system. Because barium has not previously been systematically sampled
at this site, there is insufficient background data to determine if this represents a release from the
landfill.
Regional Board staff anticipates revising the facility WDRs in the Fall of 2004 when the landfill is
closed. Until the WDRs are revised Forward Inc. should include barium in the list of groundwater
monitoring constituents.
If you have any questions please call me at (916) 464-4614.
-
Ross D.
