COUNTY OF SAN JOAQUIN THOMAS M.GAU
DEPUTY DIRECTOR
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
P.O. BOX 1810- 1810 E. FLINN FAX (209) 468-2999
INTERIM DIRECTOR
STEL[ WINKLER
DE, DIRECTOR
August 20, 2001
MEMORANDUM
Cr
co
TO: Robert McClellon,Lead Senior R.E.H.S.
Public Health Services
Environmental Health Division
FROM: Dan Johnson
Assistant Engineer
SUBJECT: LANDFILL GAS MONITORING AT THE MIGRANT FARM LABOR CAMP
County staff monitored the farm labor camp adjacent to Harney Lane Sanitary Landfill for methane on
August 1, 2001, using the GasTech Landfill Monitor which was calibrated by County staff prior to
sampling. The first thirteen structures nearest to the landfill and the vents from the eleventh and twelfth
structures were tested for methane.
Small traces of gas were found in units#3, #9, #14,#15 and#20. Units#3, and#14 had detections of up
to 500 ppm, whereas units#9, #15 and#20 had detections up to 200 ppm. In each of these cases, the
highest detections were found behind or in the immediate vicinity of the ovens. Additionally the odor of
utility gas was present in all cases. Because of this, the County believes that the emissions were coming
from loose connections behind the ovens. The manager of the labor camp was notified of leaks. There
were also minor detections at the vents of the two structures tested. Initial readings of 200 ppm and 150
ppm were detected in the vents of the eleventh and twelfth structures respectively, however the readings
dropped back to zero within 45 seconds in both cases.
No sustained emissions were found coming from the vents of the structures.
The next monitoring event will be performed in October 2001.
Please call me at 468-3066, if you have any questions.
DJ:vn
NADan\11[\C7w\3rd200I camp.wpd
c: Gino Yekta, California Integrated Waste Management Board
LA 11458
