Box 388
Stockton, CA 95202--0388
SUBJECT: GAS MONITORING AT HARNEY LANE SANITARY LANDFILL
SWIS#39-AA-0003
Dear Mr. McClellon:
I would like to thank you for your time in assisting me in conducting a site visit at the Harney
Lane Sanitary Landfill. The purpose of our site visit was to perform gas monitoring from all
of the gas monitoring probes so that we can adequately assess the landfill gas situation,
however due to time constraints, I was not able to complete the gas sampling and monitor all
of the probes as I had originally planned.
As you noticed during our gas sampling from the four gas monitoring probes, GW 1 through
GW4, landfill gas was detected at methane concentrations ranging from 0.1% in the GW1
Intermediate probe to 3.5% in the GW3 Deep probe,by volume. At these concentrations,
methane gas does not pose an explosive hazard as it is below the Lower Explosive Limit,
however, it should be closely monitored, specially in light of the fact that these probes are
located immediately adjacent to the migrant farm labor camp.
During our site visit, I noted landfill gas odor in the flare station house from one of the
blowers, however the odor was not as strong as it was detected during our last visit. I also like
to point out that the site continues to suffer from drainage and erosion problems as well as
settlement as was noted during our last site visit and pointed out in our letter of January 18th,
2000.
Please have the operator provide this office with the most recent four quarterly gas sampling
results from this site. Furthermore, since the probes at this site have shown detectable
concentration of methane gas, we would like to set up a time to sample all of the gas
monitoring probes at this site.
California Environmental Protection Agency
;.7'rinted on Recycled Paper
