KLEINFELDER
4 SOIL BORROW
4.1 BORROW INVESTIGATION
Kleinfelder performed a borrow investigation in 1987, which was included in the original
Closure Plan. Since the time of the 1987 investigation, the landfill has reached final grade
and approximately 70 percent of the material from the borrow area has been used for daily
cover and foundation material. The remaining material quantities are insufficient to satisfy
the total quantities required for final cover. In addition, the remaining material does not
exhibit the quality needed to construct the barrier layer unless admixtures are used.
Kleinfelder was retained by the SJDPW to perform an investigation of currently available
on-site soils and to design a mix for producing the soil needed to construct the barrier layer.
The design approach for the mixing project is to mix commercial clay soil from North
American Refractories Ione, California, or a comparable source with on-site soil to meet
the requirements of Chapter 15 for the barrier layer soil. See Section 2.4 for a detailed
Ar
description of the mix design.
4.2 OPERATIONS
{ 4.2.1 Construction Methods
The soil for the final cover will be transported from the borrow area by scraper or truck to
L the area of placement or the mixing area for the barrier layer material. Additional
El information on construction methods is contained in Section 6.2.2.
r 4.2.2 Control
L
The SJDPW will provide grade control of the excavation to achieve drainage of the
excavations.
i
L
CR9-42 Page 15 of 28
Copyright 1991 Kleinfelder, Inc.
