kn
File No. 20-1008-49.001 KLEBNFELDER
July 8, 1993
Borrow Soil Description -200 Sieve (Percent Passing)
Gray sand (SP) 4%
Brown silty sand (SM) 28%, 26%
Based on the sieve analysis and visual observations, SP/SM material was not present in the
borrow area. We recommended mixing two parts SP material to one part SM material to
achieve the SP/SM test pad soil as required by the CQA plan. Mixing was accomplished by
thinly spreading two scrapper loads of SP material on one load of SM material and blading this
mixture. This soil mixture was then transported by scrapper to the test pad where additional
lab testing was performed.
TEST PAD CONFIGURATION
The test pads were approximately 150 feet in length. The ML and SM test pads were
approximately 23 feet wide; the SP/SM test pad was approximately 46 feet wide. The long
axis of the test pads were aligned in a north/south direction. The actual configuration of the
test pads is shown on Plate I.
SITE PREPARATION
Prior to construction of the test pad, the site was cleared of all brush, grass and any other
organic matter which had grown subsequent to the completion of the foundation layer.
Foundation material removed during the course of this procedure was replaced and the
foundation layer was restored to its original final grade and surveyed by the County. The
foundation layer was compacted to a minimum relative compaction of 90 percent (ASTM test
method D-1557 "A").
TEST PAD CONSTRUCTION
Approximately 15 to 16 inches of SP/SM, SM, and ML materials were placed by county crews
in the respective locations on the test pad. Composite samples from five locations from each
test pad were acquired for sieve analysis to verify visual classification and the results were as
follows:
Test Pad -200 Sieve (Percent Passing)
ML 56%, 53%
SP/SM 15%, 12%
SM 22%
Copyright 1993 Kleinfelder, Inc.
