kTj
File No. 20-1008-49 KLEINFELDER
December 22, 1994
transmission line. The primary and secondary sites consisted of approximately 78 and 8'h
acres, respectively. Additionally, sideslopes for the primary site were approximately 8 acres.
Both the County and Teichert staked the landfill area in a 100-foot grid pattern based on
northings and eastings prior to and during construction. The purpose of the staking was to
establish grade control for foundation, barrier, and vegetative layers.
SITE PREPARATION
Prior to construction of the foundation layer, the site was cleared of all brush, grass and any
other organic matter which had grown subsequent to the completion of the foundation layer.
Foundation material removed during the course of this procedure was replaced and the
foundation layer was restored to its original final grade and surveyed by the County. The
County's survey results are provided in the Final Documentation Report. Moisture
conditioning was performed with the aid of a water truck at both the borrow site and the
primary and secondary sites. Samples of the foundation layer were randomly acquired in
accordance with the CQA plan for compaction curves, gradations, and hydrometer analysis.
The sample test results are summarized with barrier layer testing in Table IV. Compaction
curves are summarized in Table VI, attached at the end of this report. The foundation layer
was compacted to a minimum relative compaction of 90 percent (ASTM test method D-1557
"A") with a CAT 825C sheepsfoot compactor. Actual compaction results are presented in the
section titled "Field Compaction Test Results."
BARRIER LAYER CONSTRUCTION
Approximately 13 to 14 inches of SM/ML borrow materials were placed by Teichert on top
of the foundation layer by scraper.
Between August 22 and September 14, 1994, haul trucks (each carrying approximately 25 tons)
delivered Ione clay from North American Refactories to the secondary and primary sites. The
trucks placed the approximate 3 to 4 inches of Ione clay over the 13 to 14 inches of borrow
materials. Samples of the Ione clay were randomly acquired in accordance with the CQA plan
for Atterberg Limits and hydrometer analysis and are summarized along with sample locations
in Table III below. A motorgrader CAT 146 spread the clay to a fairly-uniform thickness of
about 3 to 4 inches during each day it was delivered. The spreading effectiveness was
confirmed by measuring clay thickness at random locations during each day of placement with
hand tools.
TABLE III
SUMMARY OF IONE CLAY CQA TESTING
Sample Liquid Plastieity % % %
No. Northing Easting Limit Index Sand Silt Clay
1 1200 1300 53 29 5 19 76
2 3100 1 2880 44 16 125 73
3 2400 2760 48 22 3 18 79
Copyright 1994 Kleinfelder,Inc.
