File No. 20-1008-49 k" KLE IN F EL D E R
December 22, 1994
less than 12 inches. Actual barrier layer thickness measurements are graphically presented on
Plates 3 and 4. Excavations were backfilled with Ione clay and properly compacted.
SIDE SLOPES
Between October 6 and 11, 1994, Teichert placed approximately 13 to 14 inches of SM borrow
material on mixing areas adjacent to the side slopes on the top of the primary site barrier layer.
The width of these materials was approximately equal to that of the side slopes.
Between October 7 and 13, 1994, haul trucks delivered Ione clay to the mixing area and a
blade spread the clay in the same manner as for the top surface barrier layer. Approximately
35 percent lone clay was used to account for the reduced compaction requirements of 90
percent relative compaction (ASTM D-1557, "A") as approved in response to our letter titled
"Comments Regarding Clay Cap on 1.75:1 Slope, Harney Lane Landfill, San Joaquin County,"
dated March 23, 1994. A sample of the Ione clay from the side slopes was acquired for
Atterberg Limits and hydrometer analysis and was previously presented on Table I.
Premixing and final mixing was performed in the same manner as for the top surface barrier
layer. Samples were acquired after final mixing for compaction curves, Atterberg Limits,
gradations, and hydrometer analysis.
Sideslope barrier soils were placed on the slopes with the aid of CAT D-6 and D-8 dozers.
The D-8 dozer pushed the soils from the mixing areas onto the upper slopes. The D6 then
spread/placed these soils along the entire slopes. Both dozers were used to compact side slope
barrier layer soils to a minimum 90 percent relative compaction. (ASTM D-1557 "A") as
summarized in the section below.
Secondary site side slopes did not receive a barrier layer as approved in response to the
Kleinfelder report "Assessment of Side Slope Infiltration, Harney Lane Landfill, San Joaquin
County, California," dated April 1, 1994. The report indicated modeling results showed little
difference between the existing cover and a Chapter 15 cap on the 2:1 sideslopes. This
variation from the specified final cap design was approved by the CIWMB and the
CVRWQCB.
FIELD COMPACTION TEST RESULTS
A total of 703 nuclear field density tests (designated 1 through 703) were performed on the
foundation and barrier layers between August 22 and October 19, 1994. Results of all tests
were verbally reported to Mr. Gabriel Karam of San Joaquin County and Teichert and are
shown on Table VII, attached. In addition, 39 sand cone density tests(designated SC-1 through
SC-39) were also performed at the site between August 22 and October 19, 1994 and are also
shown on Table VII.
Copyright 1994 Kleinfelder, Inc.
