Clayton Group Services
In general, groundwater monitoring wells are used for obtaining groundwater samples for
determining groundwater quality, observing groundwater levels and flow conditions, and
evaluating hydrologic properties of the subsurface aquifers. Some groundwater
monitoring wells are installed solely for water level measurement, and these commonly
are called piezometers, in reference to the "piezometric surface" or potentiometric surface
which is the groundwater surface.
Monitoring well installation shall follow California Department of Water Resources
Bulletin 74-90 (Supplement to Bulletin 74-81) - California Well Standards and ASTM
standards, Designation D 5092 - 90 Standard Practice for Design and Installation of
Ground Water Monitoring Wells in Aquifers. By reference, these standards are
incorporated into these Standard Operating Procedures.
Competent drilling companies and drillers are highly experienced in the installation of
groundwater monitoring wells; however, implementation of implementation of the Work
Plan, being certain that the Health and Safety Plan is being followed, and supervision of
the drilling are the responsibility of the on-site geologist, not the driller. In general, the
driller can be relied on to properly drill the soil boring to the specified depth and install
the monitoring well following the on-site geologist's specifications and the above-
mentioned standards.
PROCEDURES
1. A Work Plan should be developed prior to monitoring well installation addressing
such concerns as tentative well locations, casing size (generally 2- or 4 -inch
diameter), casing material (generally schedule 40 PVC, but may be stainless steel),
tentative screen interval, tentative well depth, etc. Obviously this information needs
to be conveyed to the driller prior to the start of field work so that he has the proper
supplies and equipment at the time of well installation. A site-specific Health and
Safety Plan also needs to be prepared.
2. Obtain a drilling permit form the appropriate regulatory agency (Los Angeles County
Department of Health Services, Orange County Health Care Agency, etc.).
