0 0
Clayton Group Services Page 3
Standard Operating Procedures
SOP -6 - Groundwater Well Development and Surveying
All well -development information and procedures should be annotated in detail in the
field logbook, documented by photographs, and posted on the attached "Well
Development and/or Groundwater Sampling Data" sheet.
Decontamination of all field equipment shall be conducted following proper procedures
(Standard Operating Procedure - Decontamination of Field Equipment - SOP -3).
All well development water and decontamination water should be properly stored,
labeled, and disposed.
WELL SURVEYING
In general, the location of each well should be accurately surveyed so that contaminant
distribution and hydrogeologic data can be plotted accurately. Commonly, a Brunton or
other accurate compass, measuring tape and/or walker can be used to accurately define
well locations relative to a fixed landmark such as the corner of a building.
Similarly, well elevations should be surveyed to the nearest 0.01 foot to assure accurate
water level measurements since very minor differences in groundwater elevations are
indicative of groundwater floe direction and velocity. At a minimum, elevations should
be determined relative to each other and a common local assumed benchmark (datum) or
to an established National Geodetic Vertical Datum (N.G.V.D.) elevation benchmark.
The overseeing regulatory agency may require that these surveys be conducted by a
licensed surveyor.
An identifying permanent mark should be placed on the top of the well casing, generally
in indelible ink or permanent marker, and elevations made to this mark. Subsequent
depth to groundwater measurements then are taken from this same mark to assure
accurate relative groundwater elevation determinations.
S \Ennr\ProjiSPOsSOP-6.doc
