9 0
PERSONNEL PROTECTION
5.1 ENGINEERING AND WORK PRACTICE CONTROLS
Engineering and/or work practice controls will be utilized as a means of protecting personnel in
the performance of specific tasks, if necessary. Some examples of such controls may include,
but are not limited to,the following:
• Water spray/mist on loose soils to prevent emission of fugitive particulate matter during
earth moving activities or during times of high winds.
• Use of portable awning for sun protection reducing the potential for the development of
heat-related disorders.
When practical, engineering controls shall be implemented to reduce and maintain employee
exposures below safe levels for those tasks demonstrating known or suspected hazards. When
engineering controls are impractical, work practice controls will be applied and subsequently
incorporated to the standard operating procedures (SOPS) for personal precautions and routine
operations. For example, pre-labeling sampling containers prior to putting on personal
protective equipment would reduce the time spent in the field and subsequent development of
heat related disorders.
5.2 PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)
Selection of the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is a complex process which
must take into consideration a variety of factors. Key factors involved in this process are
identification of the hazards, or suspected hazards; their routes of potential exposure to
employees (inhalation, skin absorption, ingestion, and eye or skin contact); and the
performance of the PPE materials (and seams) in providing a barrier to these hazards. In
addition, Site specific and task specific conditions are also evaluated during the selection of
PPE. PPE will be organized into levels of protection (LOP) appropriate for the Site.
5.2.1 LEVELS OF PROTECTION (LOP)
As described in Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations Section 5192, Appendix B, the
specific requirements for the different LOPS are as follows:
LEVEL A
1. The hazardous substance has been identified and requires the highest level of protection for
skin, eyes, and the respiratory system based on either the measured (or potential for) high
concentration of atmospheric vapors, gases, or particulates; or the Site operations and work
15 nzf[x f MAZWKM
P:\707 Cove Contractors\Groundwater\Well Installation Workplans\SHSP\SHSP_FINAL.doc
