v
The following average storage limits and capacities are presented below for
various recyclable items:
Item Quantity Storage_Time
Green Waste 60 tons 72 hours
White Goods 20 tons 48 hours
Metals 10 tons 48 hours
Plastics 10 tons 48 hours
3.1.4.3 MATERIALS PROCESSING AND VOLUME REDUCTION
Volume reduction operations are conducted at the CVWSMRF/TS. Nearly all
recyclable material recovered in the MRF is baled to increase the weight per unit
volume. The facility is equipped with a NRB 2002 baler, which is used to bale
paper products and plastics. A Bollegraaf model 80 baler is planned to bale
additional recyclable materials including newspaper, aluminum and tin cans. The
balers are located in the MRF facility (see Figure 6). Additional size reduction
occurs in the wood waste recovery area and rock and rubble area. _Recovered
wood waste, lumber and the wood fraction of yard waste is ground to produce
wood chips for use in landscaping or other useful applications. Rock and rubble
is screened using a rock shaker. Materials screened with a particle size of 1/2
inch or smaller is used for construction projects on-site. Other materials with a
particle size of larger than 1/2 inch is sold as rip rap.
3.1.4.4 MATERIALS REMOVAL
Materials removal operations at the station are conducted on an ongoing basis.
When a full shipment of recyclable materials is ready it is transported to a
secondary materials market. The amount of materials and frequency of removal
depends upon the composition of the recyclables, the amount of recyclable
material recovered and the efficiency of sorting.
During normal operating conditions municipal solid waste is processed the same
working day. Mixed waste that is not processed by the end of the working day
is left on the transfer station tip floor until it can be properly loaded into transfer
trailers the next working day. In no case are materials allowed to be stored on -
Central Valley Waste Services MRF/TS 3-5
Transfer/Processing Report
(L:\Wstemgmt\2002.040\Reports\FinaITPR\Sec3:05/09/02) BRYAN A.
