AM
2REPUBLIC
40 SERVICES Safety Manual
E
Chemical manufacturers and distributors are responsible for determining the hazards associated
with their products. This information will be relayed to Republic personnel through the use of
container labels and MSDS.
If new information is discovered about a substance the chemical manufacturers, importers, and
distributors are required to update their MSDS. This new hazard information will be transmitted
to Republic Services personnel as it becomes available.
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are obtained and reviewed prior to the use of any chemical by
Republic personnel or contractors at this Republic facility, Chemicals or products containing
chemicals are not used at the facility until responsible personnel have evaluated them. MSDS are
required for all chemicals (cleaners, solvents, paints, coatings, etc.), which are not articles or
consumer products. Copies of the MSDS for chemicals currently used are maintained in a MSDS
Notebook or a similar system. Originals of the MSDS are stored separately as backup copies.
An MSDS Inventory (Form 1027 or equivalent form) is maintained in the MSDS Notebook, or
computerized system, to identify chemicals for which MSDS have been collected, The Inventory is
updated as necessary to maintain an accurate list of MSDS that are in the MSDS Notebook, or
computerized system.
A computerized database can be substituted for the MSDS Notebook if the Facility Manager
ensures that all personnel can adequately and easily access the database during their work shift.
Clear instructions for accessing the MSDS database must be posted near the applicable PC, The
Facility Manager must maintain a master paper file of the MSDS but the department MSDS books
and inventory can be eliminated if the Facility Manager has made arrangements for all personnel to
have access to the database.
MSDS for chemicals no longer used are removed from the MSDS Notebook, or system, and a
mark is placed in the "MSDS Retired" column on the MSDS Inventory, MSDS are archived in the
MSDS database by removing the MSDS from the list of active (currently used) MSDS and by
providing access to a separate list of archived MSDS. Retired MSDS are stored for a minimum of
30 years after the last use of the chemical product.
0 2009 Republic Services Hazard Communication program
