2.7 LOADING TRANSFER VEHICLES
Transfer trucks enter the site and proceed to the ramp at the rear of the MRF, which allows the
trucks to park below the loading chute (Figure 2). The transfer trucks are loaded with solid waste
through the chute. During loading, the vehicle weight is monitored using a platform scale at the
bottom of the transfer chute, allowing the trailer to be filled to the maximum allowed weight.
Once the trailer is loaded, it leaves the tunnel and exits the facility via the gate (Figure 2).
2.8 Provisions for Peak Loading
Peak loading of vehicles at the scale house is accommodated by opening a second cashier
window at the scale house.
Peak loading by refuse within the MRF is accommodated by accumulating the material within the
MRF until peak loading conditions are passed.
The storage capacity within the MRF is approximately 8,200 CY, which is sufficient to store one
Aft
IV full day of refuse under conditions of maximum permitted receipt. This storage will be used to
accumulate refuse for delivery to the disposal facility after peak loading conditions have passed.
If the ability to transfer refuse to the disposal facility nears capacity, additional transfer vehicles
and drivers will be put into service. In 2009, approximately 6 trucks were used to transfer refuse
to Foothill Sanitary Landfill. An additional 4 trucks can be put into use if needed. The County
has per-qualified temporary drivers available on short notice.
2.8.1 Storage Capacity
Storage capacity is based on utilization of 60 percent of the useable floor space, or approximately
55,600 square feet. Assuming and an average waste height of 12 feet, a minimum storage
volume of approximately 8,200 CY is provided.
Assuming a bulk refuse density of 350 pounds per cubic yard, this volume can hold
approximately 1440 tons of refuse, which exceeds the maximum daily permitted refuse receipt.
Lovelace MRF and Transfer Station Department of Public Works/Solid Waste Division
Transfer Processing Report County of San Joaquin
April 10,2015 16
