2.5 PROCESSING
0 2.5.1 Separation
"Processing" replaces "Incoming
Materials Storage" (found on page
12 of new document)
Collection trucks with loads of refuse and recyclables are directed to the commercial side of the
MRF. Recyclable material from commingled, source separated, commercial and industrial
sources are dumped on the tipping floor where it is manually inspected, and recyclable materials
separated by refuse workers. Hazardous wastes are removed from the waste stream.. Source -
separated recyclable materials are also unloaded onto the tipping floor.
Non -recyclable solid waste is moved towards the loadingchute.
Recyclable materials are pushed to the south end of the tipping floor and placed in 40 yard bins
for delivery to the appropriate rec c
Hazardous materials and other items that are prohibited from disposal in the landfill, such as
CRTs, propane tanks or antifreeze that are visible at this time are identified by the spotters or
equipment operators and separated immediately. In the event of a spill, spotters and vehicle
operators will contact a supervisor respond according to the situation.
2.5.2 Size Reduction
ANNIL
Some material non -recyclable material is suitable for direct deposit into a transfer vehicle. Other
bulky material is reduced in size prior to deposit in a transfer truck. Size -reduction is
accomplished by coMpacting the refuse by a wheeled compactor in a designated compaction area
(Figure 5). In that area, refuse is spread in lavers approximately two feet thick, and the compactor
makes several passes. The refuse undergoes further visual inspection by the operators of the
loaders and then again b tperator of the compactor.
Except for maintenance, the compactor is parked on waste. The waste will be compacted and
removed for disposal daily.
2.6 Safety Measures in the Materials Recovery Facility
2.6.1 Lovelace Transfer Station Customers
Safety of site customers is paramount criterion in operating the site. Parkin and nd tipping areas are
clearly marked. Signs are provided to direct the flow of traffic. Attendants direct traffic within the
MRF to reduce potentially dangerous situations. Users of the MRF are required to keep pets and
children within their vehicle at all times.
Lovelace MRF and Transfer Station Department of Public Works/Solid Waste Division
Transfer Processing Report 20 County of San Joaquin -Revised 8/23/07
