9 . 9
Table 1. Trace element concentration limits for composts (Provisional, 5/95). Concentrations are
total elemental,mg/kg dry weight basis.
Arsenic
,
Cadmium
39
r
r « «

Copper
15 r
Lead
0
Mercury
17
Molybdenum
Nickel
420
Selenium
36
Zinc
2800
Note on Table 1: The trace element concentration limits listed in Table 1 are for composts
applied to cropland at agronomic rates. The values are identical to those in the California
Integrated Waste Management Board's composting operations regulatory requirements and the
U. S. EPA's high quality pollutant concentration limits for land application of sewage sludge and
sewage sludge -containing products (Standards for the Use or Disposal of Sewage Sludge, 40 CFR
Fart 503, Federal Register, 2119193). The value for molybdenum is the "ceiling concentration
limit" from Part 503. Sampling Requirements: [Insert sampling and analytical protocols
consistent with California composting operations regulatory requirements. - note that Part 503 is
based on monthly averages for sludge application not compost or co -compost.)
Table 2. Compost production and product information to be provided to users.
1 Feedstock materials and percentage by weight or volume at the beginning of composting,
d the quantity of any additives or amendments present in the finished product [list of
terms will be developed to describe feedstock materials, and will include terms such as yard
trimmings, manure, wood chips.]
Reason: Will help determine appropriate use of product and provide insight as to what analyses
may be important.
2. Average temperature during composting, peak temperature, and length of time at or above
average temperature
Reason: Determine whether weed seed and pathogen reduction has been accomplished.
3: Composting method (static pile, windrow, in -vessel, other), frequency of turning or
aeration, and length of curing phase
Reason -
Will help determine consistency in composition and biological stability. .
