Client: Jenkins Poultry Farms QC1# G-94-841
Project: Mello Road Ranch Page 2
accumulation and odors., However, if the lagoon truly operaten
facultatively, odor control will be enhanced.
Design capacity was the first objective prior to lagoon
construction. Yearly manure production from 75, 000 layers is
calculated to be 109, 500 cu ft. The south lagoon has a storage
capacity of 144, 251 cu ft. From the scientific literature,
calculations show the expected anaerobic lagoon life expectancy,
until it is 50t full of sludge to be:
0 . 016 m3/bird/yr (sludge accumulation rate) =
0 . 016 X 75, 000 layers= 1, 200 m3/yr
4, 080 0 storage capacity + 1200 m3/yr= 3 .5 yrs .
The climatic conditions present at the lagoons, especially the hot
summers will increase sludge degradation. It is anticipated that
the south lagoon will have to be draglined every five to seven
years .
Rainwater storage capacity was the second objective for design
considerations . The north lagoon, which is nearly equal in
capacity as the south lagoon, will be used as rainfall runoff
overflow. From the published isopluvials of the 25 yr, 24 hr
precipitation, the data indicates 2 . 5 inches of rain for this storm
event . Using the rational method for stormwater runoff : the
formula is Q=Cia, where Q= runoff volume needed in cu ft . The
entire surface area for both lagoons, embankments and levee roads
is 62, 500 sq ft. The runoff coefficient for a pond is 1 . 0 and the
runoff in feet (incorporating a 25t safety factor on the 2 . 5 inches
of rain) is 0 .26 . Therefore:
Q (cu ft needed) = 62, 500 X 1.00 X 0 .26 = 16, 250 X 2 (safety
factor) = 32, 500 cu ft of needed storage. The north lagoon has a
capacity of 71, 928 cu ft which allows for sufficient rainfall
storage .
t I
. ............
Err1
N

QuilityJO ntrol J.'Ped.
