OPERATING PROCEDURES TO MINIMIZE ODORS <br /> In order to minimize the development of conditions that could lead to odor problems, <br /> the compostable material handling areas of the site were chosen based on their design, <br /> location,climatological factors,adjacent land use,grading,and drainage controls. <br /> By composting the poultry manure already produced on-site, the odors should be <br /> reduced since, 1) the poultry manure will be processed into compost daily, and 2) rapid <br /> drying and mixing of the manure will greatly reduce odors. All poultry manure will <br /> then be processed directly into compost. The initial mixing of the poultry manure and <br /> the wood shavings, rice hulls, and/or grape pumice will have the highest odors mainly <br /> due to the freshness of the poultry manure. Once the composting process continues, <br /> odors will be reduced. Site personnel will assess all wood materials upon receipt, as <br /> well as the compost product for any potential odor problems. Site personnel have been <br /> trained to manage the compost material in a manner that will minimize the development <br /> of any conditions that could lead to objectionable odors. <br /> AERATION <br /> The method of aeration that is being utilized is the "turned / churned method". A pile <br /> of compost can be of almost any length. The height of pile will range from 3 to 4 feet <br /> for dense materials with poor structures like poultry manure. S.K.S. compost rows are <br /> approximately 3 feet in height, and 20 feet in width,and 250 feet in length. Composting <br /> consists of placing the compost materials in a long narrow pile or row which are than <br /> agitated or turned on a regular basis. Everyday when new manure and wood shavings, <br /> rice hulls, and/or grape pumice are added the pile is mixed and moved 7 feet. The <br /> windrow is aerated primarily by natural or passive air movement. The rate of air <br /> exchange depends on the porosity of the row. <br /> MOISTURE CONTENT OF MATERIALS AND MOISTURE MANAGEMENT <br /> Fresh poultry manure has a moisture content of approximately 75%. This manure is <br /> transported directly from the on-site Honen's to the on-site composting facility. The <br /> purchased wood shaving, rice hulls, and grape pumice are from an outside source and <br /> consist of virtually no moisture. The lack of moisture aids in the minimization of odors <br /> as well as the composting process. The desired moisture content in the compost row is <br /> about 50%. <br /> 8 <br />
