For the crops proposed for use by Manteca, the 1995 Edition of the Western
Fertilizer Handbook lists the following maximum nitrogen usage:
Annual Crop Yield Maximum
ro Tons pgr Acrel Nitrogen. lbs./ac.l
Alfalfa 8 480
Corn (grain) 5 240
Corn (silage) 30 250
Sorghum-Sudan 8 325
1 1995 Edition of Western Fertilizer Handbook
If the City wishes to pursue approval of increased application rates based on double cropping the
fields, the City should submit a report prepared by an agronomist or similar expert evaluating the
anticipated crop yields and nitrogen usage from the proposed double cropping. The report should
fully describe the crops and growing procedures to be used, and provide technical backup for the
anticipated crop yields and nitrogen usage. Following our review of the report,we may grant
higher application rates.
In your 1 December 1995 letter you requested approval to use a harrowing method instead of
discing for incorporating biosolids into the soils on those fields growing alfalfa. Your request is
approved provided the biosolids are harrowed into the soils within 48 hours after application.
If you require any additional information, please contact me at(916)255-3030.
MICHAL H.
