MUSCO OLIVE PRODUCTS, INC.
AND THE STUDLEY COMPANY
CLASS II SURFACE IMPOUNDMENTS
TRACY PLANT
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
Musco Olive Products, Inc. operates an olive brining facility five miles southwest of Tracy at an
elevation of approximately 280 feet. Musco has constructed two Class H surface impoundments to
store and evaporate olive wash water and waste brine. The third surface impoundment is proposed
for construction under these waste discharge requirements.
Brine and wash water will contain sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide, ferrous gluconate, olive
solids and liquids and water. The pH will be less than 12. These wastes are classified as
designated under Chapter 15.
The climate at the site is such that evaporation is over 100 inches per year, while rainfall is less
than 15 inches per year.
Ground water beneath the site occurs in three zones. These are: (1) a shallow perched zone of
limited areal extent; (2) a large confined aquifer of poor quality water at a depth of about 225 feet,
and (3) a second confined aquifer at a depth of about 575 feet. The strata above the first confined
aquifer consists mostly of sandy, silty clay, sandy silt and clayey/sandy silt. The strata between
the two confined aquifer zones consist of a massive clay zone known as the Corcoran Clay. Due
to the confined nature of the aquifers beneath the surface impoundments and the thick sequences of
clay, ground water monitoring would not provide early detectionofa leak from the surface
impoundments. Therefore, a system of lysimeters is used as the primary leak detection system for
the surface impoundments.
Lysimeters were placed below the lined surface impoundments at 5 and 10 foot depths to monitor
the vadose (unsaturated) zone. There are 2 additional lysimeters placed at a distance from the
ponds for purposes of background monitoring. Lysimeters LY -17, -18, -23, and -24 have
sporadically detected measurable amounts of water which is believed to be detected from possible
leaks in the wastewater delivery pipeline.
Further investigation is needed to determine the cause of high TDS readings in the lysimeters.
Surface water drainage is to an unnamed dry stream which flows east toward San Joaquin Valley.
