(AGE)
and has the following comments.
The Report documents the installation of six soil vapor extraction (SVE)wells, two paired
cone penetrometer test (CPT) borings, one groundwater monitoring well and the results
of a soil vapor extraction pilot test.
The groundwater monitoring well, MW-5, was installed to monitor the shallow
groundwater down-gradient from the site. Initial analytical results were below reporting
limits for all constituents analyzed. The CPT borings were installed to investigate the
vertical extent of the groundwater contamination onsite. Grab groundwater samples
were collected from three different depths; 88 feet, 95 feet and 115 feet below surface
grade (bsg). Analytical results were below reporting limits for all constituents analyzed.
The six SVE wells were installed in three clusters of two wells each, located to surround
the underground storage tank (UST) area. The wells were built to two different depths;
three wells are 30 feet deep and three wells are 60 feet deep. Separate SVE pilot tests
were conducted on the different depth wells. The SVE test conducted on the deeper
screened wells was aborted after one hour because the wells were unable to sustain a
measurable flow rate. The SVE test conducted on the shallow wells was successful.
The shallow wells sustained a good flow rate, vapor samples were collected for analysis
and an effective radius of influence was measured at approximately 62 feet. All vapor
samples reported significant concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons, indicating SVE
could be an effective remedial alternative for the soil contamination at this site.
The Report recommends preparation of an Interim Remedial Action Work Plan to outline
installation and operation of an SVE system at this site. SJC/EHD agrees with this
recommendation. Please proceed with preparation of the proposed work plan and
submit it to SJC/EHD no later than May 11, 2007.
