Glees Environmental Management Inc U-Haul##709 50 002-70950-03 Groundwater Monitoring Report 10/22/01 2.0 SITE BACKGROUND 2 1 SITE DESCRIPTION Amerco/U-Haul owns and occupies the property and currently uses the site as a U-Haul vehicle and equipment rental and repair shop Two single-story buildings occupy the site The buildings include a former service station building and a garage,which was added to the original building The original building consists of an office/retail area and two garage bays on the south The add-on structure consists of two garage bays A separate storage container is located on the south side of the building Site features are shown on Figure 2 The site was formerly used as a gasoline storage and retail facility According to a 1994 SOTA Environmental Technology, Inc (SOTA) work plan, the site was used as a gasoline retail facility from approximately 1950 until 1976 In 1976, the site was listed in the Polk directory as "Stockton Moving Center" From 1976 until 1990, the site was apparently used as a moving equipment rental facility Since 1990, U-Haul has used the site in its current capacity 2 2 DETECTION OF HYDROCARBON RELEASE According to a 1990 ETS Environmental &Assoc (ETS) report, four underground storage tanks(USTs)and associated fuel dispensers were removed from the site in 1990 The four USTs included one 10,000-gallon, one 8,000-gallon, and one 6,000-gallon capacity tanks that contained unleaded and gasoline fuel, and one 250-gallon capacity waste-oil tank The tanks were orientated approximately cast-west and located in the area labeled "Former UST Location" (Figure 2) Upon removal, the tanks were not replaced According to ETS, analytical results of soil samples collected from beneath the former USTs and associated product lines indicated detectable concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil Based on results of soil samples collected during removal of the USTs, the hydrocarbon release areas included(1) the UST area and (2) the product piping areas(Figure 2) 2 3 WELLS AT THE SITE Due to requests made by the SJC, Blaes Environmental conducted additional site characterization activities in January 2000, prior to implementing a remedial program Additional site characterization activities included, in part, the installation of eight new monitor wells screened across two depth intervals 3
