++NI y
M.J. Kloberdanz & associates . Post Office Box 576981
Modesto, CA 95357-6981
Environmental Services Phone. (209) 577-8186
Fax. (209) 577-8158
May 17, 2001
Ms Lon Duncan -
San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Division
P O Box 2009
Stockton, California 95201
RE Addendum II- Work Plan, Subsurface Soil and Groundwater Investigation III,
Ripona Market, 223 West Washington Street, Ripon, California
On behalf of Nagab G (Mike) Elsumeri, M J Kloberdanz and Associates is pleased to
submit a second addendum to the Work Plan, Subsurface Soil and Groundwater
Investigation III, Ripona Market, 223 West Washington Street, Ripon, California (M J
Kloberdanz and Associates, January 18, 2001) in compliance with the directives of the
March 30, 2001 letter from the Environmental Health Division / San Joaquin County
Public Health Services (SJCEHD/PHS) In the March 30, 2001 letter, the SJCEHD/PHS
expressed concerns about the March 16, 2001 addendum to the work plan which
proposed using a Geoprobe to define the vertical and lateral extent of the soil and
groundwater contamination at the site The letter requested that other alternatives for
drilling be evaluated
The use of Cone Penetrometer Testing technology for soil and groundwater sampling was
examined The procedure, as described by a drilling contractor, follows
"The work is completed using a 25 ton CPT rig and accompanying support ng The
dead weight of the CPT ng is used as a reaction to push the cone penetrometer using a
hydraulic ram Iocated at the center of the truck Soil parameters such as Cone bearing,
sleeve friction, friction ratio, pore water pressure are measured as the cone
penetrometer is advanced These measurements are sent uphole through the cone rods
to an on-board data acquisition system All data is processed in real time in the field so
that decisions can be made by the field geologist CPT plots of tip resistance, sleeve
friction, friction ratio and pore pressure are provided in the field along with a table of
interpreted soil parameters "
"After completion of the CPT sounding, a Hydropunch type groundwater sample is
taken at the desired depth interval The Hydropunch type sampler operates by pushing
1 75 inch diameter hollow rods with a steel tip to the desired depth A filter screen is
attached to the tip At the sampling depth, the rods are retracted, exposing the filter
screen and allowing for groundwater infiltration A small diameter bailer is then used
to collect groundwater samples through the hollow rod "
"The soil sampling is conducted using a piston sampler The closed sampler will be
pushed to the desired depth at which point it will be locked into the open position
