Lv
HARDOUS WASTE CHARACTERIZATION :
A generator is any person, by site, whose act or process produces hazardous waste
or whose act first causes a waste to become subject to regulation as a hazardous waste.
There are three "Generator Status" levels -
LQG (Large Quantity Generator) – More than 1000 kg of hazardous waste/month
SQG (Small Quantity Generator) – Less than 1000 kg of hazardous waste/month
VSQG (Very Small Quantity Generator) – Less than 100kg of hazardous
waste/month
Generator Status determines how long we can store material, how we transport material ,
and what fees and specific regulations might apply.
Ace Hardware is considered a VSQG or Very Small Quantity Generator. We already
know that we generate hazardous waste due our selling of propane and latex paints, we
also know that the storage of latex paint for recycling qualifies as hazardous waste . . . can
you identify other situations that might involve the generation of hazardous materials?
— key filings) (damaged inventory) (customer returns)
The key to understanding hazardous material handling is : "If in doubt, treat it as a
hazardous material . "
CONTAINMENT AND MANAGEMENT
Containment management is largely common sense. Business has moved beyond
simply leaving stuff sitting around. If you think an item is hazardous than treat it as such
and consider what proper steps for containment and handling would apply. Even simple
household products can no longer be simply thrown into the trash. If it cannot be re-used
for its intended purpose than it must be disposed of in a legal and lawful manner. The
same applies to storage of materials .
Fremont Plaza Ace Hardware has an approved storage cabinet located in the
screen room for storage of materials considered hazardous .
Fortunately for us, the propane is self-contained as long as it is kept in the locked
cages provided by our vendor.
The issue of latex paint storage is a little trickier in that we no longer are
participants in the State paint recycling program known as CA Paint Care . We are
looking into getting back into that program. In the meantime, we must track the volume
ill NO LONGER accept used paint from our
of latex paint waste generated and we w
customers . If they ask, advise them they can recycle the paint through San Joaquin
County Household Waste program . If we cannot sell the miss-matched paint at a
discount, we will work harder at giving it away to Non Profits . In the past we have
