FIELD PROCEDURES
This section describes the field procedures which are normally followed during hydrogeologic
investigations Some of these procedures are generalized The main body of the report describes any
specific procedures followed for this particular project
' A.1 Soil Sampling
1 Soil borings will be advanced to describe the subsurface according to the precision of the sampling
program described in the workplan The sampling intervals should detect the presence or absence of
petroleum hydrocarbon fuel findings, through soil samples submitted for laboratory analysis. The
locations of the borings are selected on the basis of existing site data and drill rig accessibility A Du
Pont field geologist will supervise the drilling and sampling program to ensure the selected locations
' of the borings, the sampling interval, and the use of the proper sampling methods
Prior to drilling, Du Pont will have appropriate public utilities delineate their lines In addition, Du
Pont will probe and use magnetic instruments to detect underground lines immediately beneath the
boring location Although Du Pont will exercise reasonable care in protecting any underground
' pipelines, tanks, and other equipment during drilling operations, we cannot be responsible for
underground equipment not identified on "as built" drawings or utility lines not identified by the
cognizant utility companies Du Pont will also obtain any necessary drilling and well installation
permits
' A hollow stem auger drilling rig will be used to advance the soil borings All drilling equipment will be
steam cleaned as necessary No drilling fluids or additives will be used Soil samples will be obtained
by the split spoon method Split spoon soil samples will be retrieved at specified intervals Each split
' spoon soil sample will be logged in detail and classified according to the Unified Soils Classification
System by the supervising field geologist
Uncontaminated soil cuttings by laboratory analysis may be distributed around the subject location in
an inconspicuous and reasonable manner with the approval of the client Soil cuttings which are known
' to be or suspected to be contaminated may be stockpiled on an impermeable surface of plastic sheeting
and covered with an impermeable plastic sheeting top The stockpile must be located on the property
' of the site and may be uncovered to permit aeration as weather permits Alternatively, soil cuttings
may also be drummed for later removal All potentially contaminated drill cuttings will remain on the
property of the client
' As a
split spoon sample is retrieved from the borehole, one aliquot of the soil sample from within the
split spoon will be transferred to a container for possible laboratory analysis, and one aliquot will be
transferred to an air tight container for on-site headspace analysis An Organic Vapor Meter (OVNI)
will then be used to scan the headspace in the container for organic vapors The OVM readings for
4005111 Rev o DuPont Environmental Remediation Services A-i
' Printed on Recycled Paper
