t ,
If the samples exhibited hydrocarbon stains or odors, they were glckly screened for organic vapors
with a portable photo-ionization detector before the ends of the " pies sleeves were covered with
Teflon sheets and capped. After labeling, the samples were placed:in a cooled ice chest.
In addition, eight samples were collected from the stockpile (Figure 2)s These were also placed in
the ice chest, and were subsequently shipped under chain-of-custody io McCampbell Analytical
Laboratories for analysis. McCampbell was instructed to composite the stockpile samples two-to-
one for analysis.
McCampbell analyzed the samples for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons in the gasoline range (TPH-
g), Methyl-tertiary-butylther (MTBE), the volatile aromatic ':'hydrocarbons benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and xylene(BTEX), and the five gasoline oxygenates (MTBE, DIPE, ETBE, TAME,
and TBA). The samples from tank #3 were also analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons in the
diesel range (TPH-i). At the request of the disposal facility, Altamont Landfill, the stockpile
samples were also analyzed for total lead. The results are summarized in Table 1. The full
laboratory report is attached to this report.
r 5.0 EXCAVATION BACKFILL
After the samples were collected, the excavation was enlarged and new underground storage tanks
were installed. The stockpiled soil was allowed to remain on site pending laboratory analysis.
6.0 RESULTS
Neither TPH-g nor TPH-d were detected above the required reporting limit of I mg/kg(1 part per
million) in any of the excavation samples. Because of their lower detection limits, however, some
€ of the volatile aromatic hydrocarbons were detected in the samples from tank#1. Benzene and
xylene were detected in two of these samples, and toluene and MTBE were also detected in one.
Concentrations are very low, however, and only slightly above the!detection limit.
Because of the much lower detection limit for gasoline oxygenates MTBE was detected in all but
one of the tank samples using EPA method 8260. Concentrationsrangedfrom a low of 6µg/!cg
per billion.T
ert-butanol TBA was also detected in the
f 45 arts ( )
arts r billion}to a high o p p
 per
sample from the north end of tank#1, at the moderately high concentration of 440 parts per billion.
.p
Total gasoline hydrocarbons were detected above reporting limits in three of four composite r
stockpile samples. The laboratory noted that the patd ram chromato terns indicate weathered to R
g _ .
f highly weathered gasoline components are predominant. Benzene Land ethylbenzene were not
present in any of these samples, but toluene, xyelene, and MTBE are present above detection limits.
Three of the five oxygenates were also detected. These results suggest that natural degradation of
the hydrocarbons has occurred at a fairly significant rate, removing many of the more volatile
hydrocarbons and leaving behind some of the heavier and less volatile components. The
2
