AIR SPARGING/SOIL VAPOR EXTRACTION PILOT TEST
r
The purpose of the air sparging (AS) and soil vapor extraction (SVE) pilot tests is to
collect data necessary to evaluate the performance and determine the effectiveness of, and design
parameters for, an AS/SVE system. The procedures for conducting the pilot tests, as well as
the data to be collected during the tests, are described below.
f
Emf.
ei
' Preparation of necessary field equipment and personnel for pilot testing Coordinating
Brown and Caldwell and subconsultants.
Day Qne
1. Collect background readings of dissolved oxygen, and water levels in the
groundwater monitoring wells -
2. Perform initial SVE test on the test well to determine vacuum and flow rate
performance curve. Check surrounding morutoring wells, or points, for similar
parameters. Collect total petroleum hydrocarbon data during testing with flame
ionization detector (FID) or photo-ionization detector (PID)and collect tedlar bag
samples for laboratory analysis. This procedure is better defined in Brown and
Caldwell's Standard Procedure for Soil Vapor Extraction Pilot Test.
3. Begin 4-hour AS test on test well. A mixture of 25 percent of helium in air as
a tracer gas will be used when performing the sparge test. Existing monitoring
wells and SVE wells (if applicable) will be used as observation wells during the
AS tests. At a minimum, three wells (if available) will be modified with
necessary piping to collect the sparge off-gas below the water table. A helium
detector will be used to monitor the presence of helium in the sparge off-gas
collected. An air compressor will be used to perform the sparge test. Two air
filters in parallel will be used to filter and remove any oil in the compressed air
before delivery to the sparge well.
i5. The test well will be sparge tested at two pressure levels- approximately 120
percent of hydrostatic head and 150 percent for a minimum of 2 hours at each
pressure or until steady-state conditions are reached. The general limit of 0 7
prig per foot of overburden will not be exceeded to avoid soil fracturing. At each
pressure step, the subconsuitant will allow approximately 2 hours for the
parameters to reach their approximate steady-state values, and will monitor the
following listed parameters before, during, and after each sparge test.
• Depth to water in sparge monitoring wells every half hour.
1
