Policy: AUS Policy Title: Revision Date: page 13 of 22
AUS - 006 Emergency Response Policy 8/10/18
2. Establish a common out-of-town contact for your family and friends. At times, calling outside of a
disaster area will improve your chances of"keeping in touch'.
3. Keep your out-of-town contact informed so he/she may inform others who may be trying to connect
with you.
FIRE/EVACUATION
In the event of fire or smoke:
1. Clear the area. Remove anyone in immediate danger.
2. Confine the fire. Close doors and windows.
3. Notify your Supervisor or a member of your Emergency Response Team.
4. If told to do so
• Sound the fire alarm.
• Dial the Emergency Telephone Number
5. You may try to put out a small fire. Do so only if:
• You have the training and authorized.
• It is safe to do so.
• You have someone with you (with another extinguisher).
• There is an exit behind you.
6. Proceed to the safest exit and begin to evacuate unless your Supervisor, emergency response
personnel or the Fire Department tell you otherwise. Go to your designated "safe" area.
Evacuation procedures:
The following procedures followed IMMEDIATELY whenever a fire alarm activates, or if you evacuate:
1. WALK directly to the closest exit. Know your evacuation routes in advance by checking the
evacuation maps posted in your facility.
2. When going through closed doors, always feel the doors and do not open any hot door surfaces.
Close doors behind you, but do not lock them.
3. DO NOT collect personal belongings before exiting. Each emergency requires your full and
immediate attention. You will receive notification when it is safe to return to the building to collect
personal items.
4. DO NOT use elevators, unless directed to do so by the Fire Department.
5. Proceed to the exit as quickly as possible, but in an orderly manner. DO NOT PUSH OR SHOVE
past others.
6. Physically challenged employees who are unable to use the stairs on their own (e.g., those in
wheelchairs, with crutches, etc.) should be taken down last to ensure a prompt evacuation. Members
of the Emergency Response Team will assist physically challenge employees.
7. DO NOT TALK during the evacuation so that you may hear the evacuation instructions.
